The argument in favor of using filler text goes something like this: If you use any real content in the Consulting Process anytime you reach.

Before you so much as grease a tin, sit down with the guest list and work out how the cake will actually be eaten. A birthday cake at a big family do is rarely the only food on offer — there is usually a buffet, a pudding, or a table groaning with sausage rolls — so most guests will want a slice rather than a slab.
Think in two portion sizes and be honest about which applies to your party:
Two practical rules of thumb. First, children often eat the icing and abandon the sponge, so count under-tens as roughly half a portion when there is plenty of other food. Second, always bake for about ten per cent more guests than you have invited — late arrivals, second helpings and a slice wrapped in foil for the neighbour who fed the cat all count.
Round tins are the classic choice, but squares and rectangles give you nearly a quarter more cake for the same footprint and cut without waste. As a rough guide for a sponge around 8cm deep, cut into finger portions:
For a crowd of 40–50, a two-tier cake of 20cm over 25cm is a lovely, manageable option — it gives you around 55 finger portions, looks celebratory on a stand, and is still light enough for one person to lift. If you would rather keep it simple, a single 30cm square tin will comfortably serve 60 and takes far less decorating time.
Two tiers need support: a cake board under each tier, and four or five dowels cut to the height of the lower tier to carry the upper one. Three tiers and above also want a central dowel pushed through the lot. It sounds fussy; it is the difference between a beautiful cake and a landslide.
Flavour is not just about taste at this scale — it is about structure. Buttery sponges and rich fruit cakes travel and stack far better than light whisked sponges loaded with fresh cream, which soften and slip within a couple of hours.
Buttercream softens noticeably above about 24°C, so for a summer party consider a chocolate ganache or a white chocolate buttercream, both of which hold their shape in a warm car. If in doubt, keep the filling firm and the decoration simple.
Sponge layers baked and cooled can be double-wrapped in cling film and kept for three to five days at room temperature, or frozen for up to three months. This is the single best favour you can do yourself — bake the layers a fortnight ahead, freeze them flat, and the week of the party is suddenly calm.
Fill and crumb coat the cake two days before, then chill it until the buttercream is firm. Apply the final coat the day before. A chilled crumb coat means the finishing layer goes on smoothly and no stray crumbs speckle the surface. Fruit cakes are even more forgiving: they mature beautifully for weeks, so you can bake in advance and simply feed and cover them.
Leave fondant-covered cakes to settle overnight at room temperature before decorating, and avoid refrigerating fondant — it sweats when it comes out and develops a sticky sheen.
Transport is where good cakes come to grief, and the fix is almost always preparation. Assemble and decorate at home only if the cake can sit flat; otherwise, transport the tiers separately and stack at the venue.
If you have decorated with fresh flowers, add them once you arrive — they bruise, and they are far easier to place on a table than in a moving car. Take a small repair kit too: a piping bag of spare buttercream, a palette knife, a few cocktail sticks and kitchen paper. Arriving ten minutes early gives you time to tidy a smudged edge, set the cake on its stand and step back to enjoy the moment — which, after all, is what the cake is for.
